Current Conversations: Juneteenth with Artist, Beth P. Leigh

June 19th is a historically significant day within the United States. The date commemorates the freeing of the slaves on June 19, 1865, TWO years AFTER President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Although Juneteenth generally acknowledges the last freeing of enslaved Blacks, slavery remained legal until 1866 and was practiced in Kentucky and Delaware until the ratification of the 13th Amendment. Recent events have brought this known day of remembrance within the Black Community to the forefront of the nation and opened the door for opportunities of learning. Inspired by her community, artist Beth ā€œPā€ Leigh created the piece, Heritage. Through broad brush strokes and bright colors, Leigh celebrates the traditional clothing patterns and tribal markings of ancestors past and present throughout the African and Black Diaspora. Join us as we learn about the importance of Juneteenth, Black Art, and the importance of community.
