Member Finds Empowerment at the Current

Sarah Majors has been a member at Current Wellness since 2022. We asked her a few questions about her experience and they were kind enough to share.

"Current is the first gym where I feel fully able to exist in the body I have in without feeling like I'm a fix-it project."
"I love movement, exercise, and strength training as they make me feel powerful."
"Current has helped me to form a new relationship with my body that is rooted in kindness, comfort with taking up space, and meeting myself where I am."
How do you feel when you're moving your body at the Current?
I have been extremely active since I was a child and historically people have acted like that is a surprise because I don't "look fit". I was a dancer for 15 years, played numerous sports, and have been a member of countless gyms where I spent hours everyday. For most of my life I have felt like my body didn't belong in those spaces since it wasn't a traditional looking active body. I love movement, exercise, and strength training as they make me feel powerful.
Current is the first gym where I feel fully able to exist in the body I have in without feeling like I'm a fix-it project. Moving my body in classes at Current has been joy filled and liberating. I am safely lifting heavier and meeting my exercise goals while also moving because I love it, I want to, and I'm celebrated.
How has Current Wellness impacted your relationship with your body?
Like a lot of people I have always been shamed for the way I take up space. I am tall, loud, wide, fat, and have spent most of my life trying to remedy those things. I have done all the diets, engaged in disordered ways of living, and spent years hating myself. After a car accident a couple years ago significantly impacted my health I realized things had to shift. I needed a space that would allow me to embrace my body.
I am tall, loud, wide, fat, and those aren't bad. They just are and I am grateful for them because I'm still here. My body is a good thing that kept me alive. Current has helped me to form a new relationship with my body that is rooted in kindness, comfort with taking up space, and meeting myself where I am rather than fatphobia, shame, and being apologetic of the body I have.

What would you say to someone who is interested in trying classes at the Current, but intimated to start?
Gyms are so scary especially if you have been traumatized previously or you're starting in a new place alone. I have found the staff, coaches, and body liberation ambassadors are incredible people who genuinely care about you. You don't have to try it alone. They're here for you as is the rest of the community.
