Trauma-Informed Movement Classes
Trauma-Informed Movement Classes: A Gentle Approach to Healing
At Current Wellness Raleigh, we believe movement can be a pathway to not only physical strength but also emotional and nervous system resilience. Our instructors recently completed trauma-informed movement training led by Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Current Wellness founder, Brit Guerin. This training deepened our understanding of how the body responds to stress and how movement classes can support healing.
Trauma-informed movement classes create space for people to reconnect with their bodies safely, gently, and without pressure.
What Is Trauma-Informed Movement?
Trauma-informed movement is a mindful approach to exercise and yoga that recognizes how past experiences shape the nervous system.
Rather than pushing through discomfort or forcing calm, trauma-informed movement focuses on helping the body develop flexibility and resilience. Participants are encouraged to respond to stress in healthy ways through gentle movement, rest, and awareness.
Many people bring experiences with them that can affect how they feel in fitness or yoga spaces, including:
- Negative experiences in gyms or fitness spaces, especially for people in larger bodies, disabled bodies, or marginalized identities
- Complicated relationships with movement and food shaped by diet culture or restrictive eating patterns
- Chronic pain or injury that makes movement feel intimidating or unsafe
- Anxiety or hyper-vigilance that makes it difficult to relax into movement
- Past trauma or abuse that impacts body awareness or comfort in group settings
Acknowledging these experiences allows us to meet participants where they are. Our trauma-informed movement classes focus on choice, exploration, and empowerment rather than comparison or performance.
Why Trauma-Informed Movement Matters
Traditional fitness culture often emphasizes pushing through discomfort or “grinding” to achieve results. Trauma-informed movement takes a different approach.
Healing happens when the body feels safe.
By creating environments where participants feel supported and respected, trauma-informed movement helps prevent movement patterns rooted in fear or tension. Instead, participants can explore movement in ways that feel empowering and sustainable.
In our trauma-informed classes, we focus on principles such as:
- Consent and invitation. Instructors offer options instead of commands so participants can choose what feels right.
- Choice and autonomy. Participants are encouraged to pause, modify, or rest whenever needed.
- Connection and support. Even small moments of connection signal safety and support the nervous system.
How This Looks in a Class
In practice, trauma-informed movement classes might include:
- Arriving in a space where you can easily orient yourself and know where things are, such as restrooms, water, and equipment. Feeling familiar with the environment can help your body settle and feel more at ease.
- Opportunities to tune into your own experience by noticing sensations and energy levels in your body.
- Movement sequences that alternate between activation and rest.
- A class environment that respects physical and emotional boundaries. You are given space to move and engage at your own comfort level, including the option to take space, pause, or choose how much conversation or interaction feels right.
- Encouragement to focus on how movement feels and what your body can do, rather than how it looks.
- Opportunities for social connection and instructor check-ins to build safety and trust
Our classes aren’t about being calm all the time. They’re about being resilient and adaptable, helping participants respond to stress in ways that feel safe and empowering.
